Paste your text and see, instantly, whether it fits: pick the field from Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Pinterest, Reddit or Discord, and this checks your character count against that platform's own documented limit rather than a guess.

Platforms change their own rules without notice. Treat this as a starting point and trust the field itself if the two disagree.

About the Character Limit Checker

Every number here traces to a real, current, widely-corroborated source rather than a round figure someone assumed. Two fields are shown without a single number on purpose: X's post limit is 280 characters on a free account and 25,000 on Premium, and TikTok's caption limit depends on whether you post from the app (4,000) or through the API most scheduling tools use (2,200). Presenting either as one absolute number would be less accurate than the truth, so the field explains the split instead.

Step by step

How to use the Character Limit Checker

Type your text, pick a style, copy it, and paste it wherever you want character limit checker.

  1. Type your text

Type or paste your text into the box at the top of the page. Every style updates live as you type, so you are previewing your own words rather than a sample.

  2. Pick a style

Scroll the list and find a style you like. Use the search box to filter by name, or the "only styles people can still search for" toggle if the text needs to stay findable.

  3. Copy it

Press Copy on that style. The styled text goes to your clipboard exactly as shown, including any spacing or marks.

  4. Paste it

Paste it wherever you need it. Because the styling is built from real Unicode characters, it travels with the text into apps that give you no font settings of their own.

Tips and common mistakes

Tips

  • Check the actual field, not the platform in general: Instagram alone has three different limits (30-character Name, 150-character Bio, 2,200-character Caption), and writing to the wrong one is the single most common reason a bio gets cut off mid-sentence.
  • A platform's hard limit and what actually displays are often different numbers. Facebook allows 63,206 characters in a post, but the feed folds anything past roughly 477 characters behind "See more" on desktop and 125 on mobile, so the number that decides whether your point lands is the fold, not the cap.
  • Emoji and accented characters can count as more than one unit on some platforms even though this tool (and most people) see them as a single character. If a platform's own counter disagrees with this one by a small amount, trust the platform's counter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check my character count against a specific platform?

Pick the platform and field from the dropdown above the text box (for example, Instagram Caption or Discord About/Bio), then type or paste your text. The count, remaining characters, and a within/near/over status update as you type, checked against that field's own documented limit.

What is the difference between characters and words?

A character is a single letter, digit, space, punctuation mark, or emoji. A word is a sequence of characters separated by whitespace. "Digital Marketer" is 16 characters and 2 words. Platform limits are almost always stated in characters, not words, which is why this tool leads with the character count.

How many characters can an Instagram bio have?

150 characters. That is separate from the Name field above it (30 characters, and the field a "stylish Instagram name" actually goes in) and the Caption field on a post (2,200 characters). All three are frequently confused for each other.

Can I check multiple social media limits at once?

Switch the platform/field dropdown and your text stays in the box, so you can see how the same bio or caption fares across every platform in this list without retyping it. This is the fastest way to find one piece of text that fits everywhere you plan to post it.

Is the Character Limit Checker free to use?

Yes. The Character Limit Checker is completely free with no sign-up, no watermarks, and no limits on how much text you convert or how many times you copy it.
