About the Discord Username Generator
Your unique username (the @handle people use to add you) allows lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores, so Unicode will simply be rejected there.
Your display name is the opposite: it accepts Unicode freely, and it is what actually appears in every channel, member list, and message. Server nicknames work the same way, so you can run a different styled name in each community you belong to.

- Set a styled display name globally and use server nicknames for community-specific variants: you can be "𝗔𝗹𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗱𝗲" as your display name and "《Alpha》𝔅𝔩𝔞𝔡𝔢" in a specific gaming server without changing your global identity.
- Mentions and DMs still work perfectly: people can tag you with your plain @username regardless of how elaborate your display name is, so there is no functional cost to a heavily styled display name.
- Medium-weight styles (bold, small caps) hold shape in the member sidebar, which renders at a small point size. Delicate script or thin decorative alphabets can look more elegant on a profile card but become hard to tell apart at 12–13px.
Common mistakes
- Trying to style the @username directly: Discord's unique username only accepts lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores, and will refuse anything else. The display name is the field that accepts Unicode.
- Choosing a style that only looks good in the profile modal and ignores how it renders in a channel message: messages render the display name at a compact size inline with message content, and a delicate style can look like a smear there.
- Copying a styled name from a preview that used sample text rather than your actual name: some Unicode letters have no styled equivalent and fall back to the plain character. Check the preview with your real name, not a test word.
