Sinhala Font & Text Generator

Sinhala is native to Sri Lanka, an Indo-Aryan language written in a script that evolved its own distinctly rounded letterforms, quite different in appearance from Devanagari or Tamil despite sharing a common ancestor. It faces the same gap in Unicode as the rest: no bold, italic or cursive alphabet was ever defined for it. A name like ආයුබෝවන් goes into this tool exactly as typed and comes out wrapped in a decorative frame and symbol dividers instead.

A short guide

Understanding Sinhala fonts

What are Sinhala fonts?

Sinhala has its own Unicode block. A Sinhala font draws its rounded consonant forms, the vowel signs that attach around them, and the conjunct letters formed when consonants combine. That combining behaviour is what makes a good Sinhala font harder to build than a Latin one, and it is why the script has fewer open web fonts available than languages with a larger font market.

Unicode fonts versus legacy fonts like FM Abhaya

This is the most useful thing to know, and most font lists skip it. FM Abhaya is the most widely used legacy Sinhala typeface, behind tens of thousands of Sri Lankan government circulars, school exam papers and newspaper archives from before Unicode became standard. It maps Sinhala shapes onto English keyboard positions, so the text underneath is really Latin and cannot be searched or copied reliably between apps. Iskoola Pota, the font Windows bundles, is genuinely Unicode.

Unicode fonts such as Noto Sans Sinhala and Abhaya Libre store real Sinhala. The text works everywhere: in search, in messages, on any device. Abhaya Libre is worth knowing by name here: it is the modern, fully open Unicode redrawing of the same historic Abhaya letterforms FM Abhaya is named after, so it gives a familiar look without the non-Unicode problems. Unless an old workflow specifically needs FM Abhaya, type in a Unicode font and your Sinhala will behave like Sinhala rather than like a picture of it.

Which Sinhala font should I choose?

It depends on what you are setting. This table pairs common needs with a free, open Unicode face:

If you are settingA good open choice
Headings and postersStick No Bills or Gemunu Libre
Body text and articlesNoto Serif Sinhala or Abhaya Libre
Apps, websites and signageNoto Sans Sinhala or Yaldevi
A calligraphic, manuscript-style headingManame

If an old document forces you to use a legacy font like FM Abhaya, install it on your computer. For anything new, a Unicode font will serve you better everywhere the text has to travel.

About the Sinhala Stylish Name Generator

That frame is what actually decorates the name, and it is also the version that pastes correctly into Instagram, WhatsApp or a game profile, since nothing about the Sinhala letters themselves was changed.

Further down the page you can preview your text in real Sinhala font families, from traditional serifs to modern sans, and see which ones are free to use on the web.

Step by step

How to use the Sinhala Stylish Name Generator

Type your text, pick a decorated version, copy it, and paste it wherever you want stylish Sinhala names.

  1. Type your text

Type or paste your text into the box at the top. Every decorated version updates live as you type, so you are looking at your own words rather than a sample.

  2. Pick a version you like

Each result is a different treatment: a frame around the text, a line through it, an underline, and more. Pick whichever one fits.

  3. Copy it

Press Copy on that version. It goes to your clipboard exactly as shown, including every symbol and combining mark.

  4. Paste it

Paste it into your bio, caption, or name field. Because it is built from real Unicode, the decoration travels with the text into apps with no font settings of their own.

  5. Or browse the font families

Further down the page is a gallery of real fonts in this script. Those are previews to look at rather than copy-paste Unicode, with a link to each font if you want to use it in a design tool.

Get it right

Tips and common mistakes

Tips

  • Simple two-symbol bracket frames from the top of the results are the ones most reliably accepted by WhatsApp and Instagram for Sinhala names.
  • Sinhala characters have distinctive circular strokes, so a minimal frame that leaves breathing room around the letters reads better than a dense multi-symbol frame.
  • Test your framed Sinhala name in the specific app before finalising it: WhatsApp renders Sinhala differently than Instagram, and the same frame can look very different between the two.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting bold or italic Sinhala letter substitutions: Unicode defines no decorative Sinhala alphabet, so only framing and combining marks are genuinely available.
  • Trying to paste a framed Sinhala name into a @username: Sinhala characters are not accepted in @handles on any major platform.
  • Choosing a frame that uses many symbols on a Sinhala name going into an Instagram Name field (30-char limit): the combination of multi-code-point Sinhala characters and a heavy frame can exceed the limit even for a short name.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make my Sinhala name bold or italic?

Not by changing the letters, because Unicode has no bold or italic Sinhala alphabet to swap them for. You can frame the name with symbols, or add strikethrough and underline, which are the effects that work on Sinhala script. The font gallery below also previews your text in real Sinhala typefaces.

Will these Sinhala names work on Instagram and Facebook?

Yes, in the Name and Bio fields, which accept any Unicode, so a framed Sinhala name pastes straight in. They will not go in an Instagram @username, which is limited to Latin letters, numbers, full stops and underscores.

What is the difference between a Unicode Sinhala font and FM Abhaya?

FM Abhaya is the most widely used legacy Sinhala typeface, behind decades of Sri Lankan government and print documents, and it maps Sinhala shapes onto English keyboard positions, so the text underneath is really Latin and cannot be searched or copied reliably between apps. Unicode fonts store real Sinhala, so the text works everywhere. The guide below explains this in full.

Is the Sinhala Stylish Name Generator free to use?

Yes. The Sinhala Stylish Name Generator is completely free with no sign-up, no watermarks, and no limits on how much text you convert or how many times you copy it.
