A short guide

Understanding Punjabi fonts

What are Punjabi fonts?

Punjabi is written in the Gurmukhi script, developed for and closely associated with Sikh scripture and literature. Like other Brahmic scripts, it combines consonants with vowel signs that attach above, below and beside them. A Gurmukhi font is a digital typeface that draws these forms and joins them correctly as you type.

Unicode fonts versus legacy fonts like AnmolLipi

This is the most useful thing to know before choosing a font. AnmolLipi is a widely used legacy font that predates standardised Unicode Gurmukhi support: it maps Punjabi letter shapes onto English keyboard positions, so the text looks right on screen but the characters underneath are really Latin. That text cannot be searched properly and breaks when it moves between apps that do not share the exact font, the same problem Kruti Dev causes for Hindi.

Unicode fonts such as Noto Sans Gurmukhi and Mukta Mahee store real Gurmukhi characters, so the text behaves correctly everywhere: search, messaging, any device. Raavi, the Gurmukhi font bundled with Windows, is also Unicode, though as a desktop font it is not licensed for embedding on a website.

Which Punjabi font should I choose?

It depends on what you are setting. This table pairs common needs with a free, open Unicode face:

If you are settingA good open choice
Body text and documentsNoto Serif Gurmukhi or Tiro Gurmukhi
Apps, websites and signageNoto Sans Gurmukhi or Mukta Mahee
Headings across many weightsAnek Gurmukhi
A bold, traditional titleLangar or Baloo Paaji 2

If an old document forces you to use a legacy font like AnmolLipi, install it on your computer. For anything new, a Unicode font will serve you better everywhere the text has to travel.

About the Punjabi Stylish Name Generator

Gurmukhi has no Unicode bold, italic or cursive alphabet of its own, so this tool wraps a phrase like ਸਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ in decorative frames and dividers instead of attempting to restyle letters that were never given a styled version.

That frame-based approach is also the one guaranteed to survive a copy-paste: Instagram, WhatsApp and most games render Gurmukhi correctly but simply ignore styling that does not exist in Unicode.

Further down the page you can preview your text in real Gurmukhi font families, from traditional serifs to modern sans, and see which ones are free to use on the web.

Step by step

How to use the Punjabi Stylish Name Generator

Type your text, pick a decorated version, copy it, and paste it wherever you want stylish Punjabi names.

  1. Type your text

Type or paste your text into the box at the top. Every decorated version updates live as you type, so you are looking at your own words rather than a sample.

  2. Pick a version you like

Each result is a different treatment: a frame around the text, a line through it, an underline, and more. Pick whichever one fits.

  3. Copy it

Press Copy on that version. It goes to your clipboard exactly as shown, including every symbol and combining mark.

  4. Paste it

Paste it into your bio, caption, or name field. Because it is built from real Unicode, the decoration travels with the text into apps with no font settings of their own.

  5. Or browse the font families

Further down the page is a gallery of real fonts in this script. Those are previews to look at rather than copy-paste Unicode, with a link to each font if you want to use it in a design tool.

Get it right

Tips and common mistakes

Tips

  • Use simple bracket or star frames for gaming and messaging profiles: Gurmukhi script is visually distinctive on its own, and a minimal frame reads better than a crowded decoration.
  • Strikethrough and underline combine directly with Gurmukhi letters as combining marks, so you can add these effects to a Punjabi name without changing the characters or spending extra space.
  • If your Punjabi name uses matras (vowel marks), test the framed result in WhatsApp specifically: Gurmukhi matras combined with Unicode frames render differently across messaging apps.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting bold, italic, or stylised Gurmukhi letters: Unicode has no decorative Gurmukhi alphabets, so letter-substitution is not available for Punjabi text, only framing and combining marks.
  • Choosing a long multi-character frame for a Free Fire name: the game's character limit is in the low teens, so a three-symbol frame on each side can leave room for only three or four Punjabi characters.
  • Putting a Gurmukhi name with Unicode frames into a @username: every major platform refuses non-Latin characters in @handles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make my Punjabi name bold or italic?

Not by changing the letters, because Unicode has no bold or italic Gurmukhi alphabet to swap them for. You can frame the name with symbols, or add strikethrough and underline, which are the effects that work on Gurmukhi script. The font gallery below also previews your text in real Punjabi typefaces.

Will these Punjabi names work on Instagram and Facebook?

Yes, in the Name and Bio fields, which accept any Unicode, so a framed Punjabi name pastes straight in. They will not go in an Instagram @username, which is limited to Latin letters, numbers, full stops and underscores.

What is the difference between a Unicode Punjabi font and AnmolLipi?

AnmolLipi is a legacy font that maps Gurmukhi shapes onto English keyboard positions, so the text underneath is really Latin and cannot be searched or copied reliably between apps. Unicode fonts store real Gurmukhi, so the text works everywhere. The guide below explains this in full.

Is the Punjabi Stylish Name Generator free to use?

Yes. The Punjabi Stylish Name Generator is completely free with no sign-up, no watermarks, and no limits on how much text you convert or how many times you copy it.
