- One word in Zalgo carries the whole effect: paste a single corrupted name inside an otherwise normal sentence and it reads as intentionally unsettling rather than unreadably chaotic.
- Lighter zalgo styles get through platform filters more reliably than maximum density: if a heavy version disappears on paste, step down to a lighter intensity and the mark count drops below most platforms' cut-off.
- Zalgo text lands best in horror-themed or meme contexts where the corrupted look is the joke. Drop it into professional or informational writing and it reads as a rendering error rather than a style choice.
Common mistakes
- Using full zalgo on more than three or four words: past that length the dense stacking of marks above and below obliterates the line spacing and the text becomes genuinely unreadable rather than interestingly distorted.
- Expecting zalgo to pass everywhere: Discord, Reddit, and most modern chat apps render it, but some email clients, older mobile apps, and spam filters strip or truncate extremely dense combining-mark runs on sight.
- Treating zalgo as a searchable or functional text element: a username or hashtag in zalgo will not match its plain equivalent in search, so it is purely a visual statement.

They use the same technique, stacking combining marks on each letter, at different intensities. Zalgo pushes it further, with marks in all three positions (above, through, and below) for the dense, corrupted look, while glitch is the lighter, more restrained version of the same idea.
Why do some apps strip out my Zalgo text?
A small number of apps deliberately limit how many combining marks a single character can carry, specifically to stop extremely dense Zalgo-style text from breaking their layout or slowing rendering. If a platform trims your text, that filter is the likely reason, and a lighter glitch style will usually get through where full Zalgo does not.
Will this style show up correctly everywhere I paste it?
